Portland George Floyd Protests – 2020

  • A fire rages outside CVS phramacy, while the store is looted.
  • Police officers wearing masks form a line as tear gas erupts in the street.
  • A looter enters a convenience store in Downtown.
  • A man injured by shrapnel from a police flashbang reaches out for help. Out of frame a nurse applies guaze and bandaging to a significant wound that required hospitalization (I know this because he ended up with my phone after I dropped it trying to support him getting to safety.)

  • Police arrest a woman for sitting in the street.
  • Police advance down Main St, knocking a woman and down as a protester guards over them
  • Police advance down Main St. through tear gas.
  • A homeless woman looks on as protesters begin to rush backwards as police announce that curfew is in effect.
  • A police officer gives directions to a woman along Salmon and 2nd Ave.
  • Several young leaders of the protest spoke about their experiences as protesters grew in number at Pioneer Square.
  • A mass die-in was held on Burnside Bridge at 7:12pm. A moment of silence was observed by the crowd for 8m46s, the time it took for George Floyd to die.
  • Protesters from the Revolution Hall meeting reached Burnside Bridge, regrouped with the Downtown protesters, and headed towards the fenced area in Downtown.
  • Protesters link arms in solidarity as they begon passing over the Burnside Bridge a 2nd time, on their way to Washington High School, where the protest started.
  • At 10:41pm, an officer aims a rubber bullet gun through the fence and fires off one round, before being ordered back by other police officers.
  • A flashbang erupts by a protesters feet, and they are undeterred, continuing to hold up a sign as smoke grenades envelope the street.
  • Protesters are routed down Main Street as the police increase the closed area to include SW Lincoln to Burnside, SW Naito to 10th Avenue.
  • A man is shoved down behind the advancing police line on SW 5th and Main street.
  • A protester dances and leads chants from the center of a drum circle on SW 3rd and Main, just outside the Federal Courthouse, on July 25.
  • “Its a beautiful struggle” says Tavis Greenwood, draped in an American flag, as he walks past a wall of tear gas while recording on the front lines.
  • Through the night, Riot Ribs continued to serve up a line of hungry protesters, as well as houseless individuals. A mountain of supplies, to include ribs, burgers, hot-dogs, water, et al are kept in coolers.
  • A firework explodes inside the fence at the Federal Courthouse.
  • Fireworks erupt between the Justice Center and the Federal Court House.
  • A protester wearing a Santa suit holds up a sign reading “NO CHRISTMAS FOR FASCIST” on July 25.
